English reserchers of the Loughborough University at ALPSTREAM
On April 2023 experiments on the artificial canal system located in Ostana began, involving some researchers of the Alpstream Center and Prof. Paul Wood, Dr. Kate Mathers and Dr. Jay Chauhan of Loughborough University. The joint experiment, which lasted until the end of May, aims to study the impacts of the excessive accumulation of fine sediment (siltation) in watercourses, and it will be conducted entirely using the Alpstream Centre's set of artificial rivers. In this regard, the use of such mesocosms certainly represents the most innovative aspect of the research: English colleagues have already conducted such an experiment in artificial rivers located at their University. By comparing the results of both experiments it will be possible to evaluate even more accurately the impacts of the excessive accumulation of fine sediment on aquatic organisms, such as benthic macroinvertebrates, with direct implications in the biomonitoring and conservation of rivers.
